Allah said,

﴿ظ‚ظژط§ظ„ظڈظˆط§ظ’ ط¥ظگظ†ظ‘ظژط§ ظ…ظژط¹ظژظƒظڈظ…ظ’﴾

(They say: "Truly, we are with you''). Muhammad bin Ishaq reported that Ibn `Abbas said that the Ayah means, "We are with you,

﴿ط¥ظگظ†ظ‘ظژظ…ظژط§ ظ†ظژط­ظ’ظ†ظڈ ظ…ظڈط³ظ’طھظژظ‡ظ’ط²ظگط،ظڈظˆظ†ظژ﴾

(Verily, we were but mocking), meaning, we only mock people (the believers) and deceive them.'' Ad-Dahhak said that Ibn `Abbas said that the Ayah,

﴿ط¥ظگظ†ظ‘ظژظ…ظژط§ ظ†ظژط­ظ’ظ†ظڈ ظ…ظڈط³ظ’طھظژظ‡ظ’ط²ظگط،ظڈظˆظ†ظژ﴾

(Verily, we were but mocking), means, "We (meaning the hypocrites) were mocking the Companions of Muhammad.'' Also, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas and Qatadah said similarly. Allah's statement,

﴿ط§ظ„ظ„ظ‘ظژظ‡ظڈ ظٹظژط³ظ’طھظژظ‡ظ’ط²ظگظ‰ط،ظڈ ط¨ظگظ‡ظگظ…ظ’ ظˆظژظٹظژظ…ظڈط¯ظ‘ظڈظ‡ظڈظ…ظ’ ظپظگظٹ ط·ظڈط؛ظ’ظٹظژظ€ظ†ظگظ‡ظگظ…ظ’ ظٹظژط¹ظ’ظ…ظژظ‡ظڈظˆظ†ظژ ﴾

(Allah mocks at them and leaves them increasing in their deviation to wander blindly) answers the hypocrites and punishes them for their behavior. Ibn Jarir commented, "Allah mentioned what He will do to them on the Day of Resurrection, when He said,

﴿ظٹظژظˆظ’ظ…ظژ ظٹظژظ‚ظڈظˆظ„ظڈ ط§ظ„ظ’ظ…ظڈظ†ظژظ€ظپظگظ‚ظڈظˆظ†ظژ ظˆظژط§ظ„ظ’ظ…ظڈظ†ظژظ€ظپظگظ‚ظژظ€طھظڈ ظ„ظگظ„ظ‘ظژط°ظگظٹظ†ظژ ط،ظژط§ظ…ظژظ†ظڈظˆط§ظ’ ط§ظ†ط¸ظڈط±ظڈظˆظ†ظژط§ ظ†ظژظ‚ظ’طھظژط¨ظگط³ظ’ ظ…ظگظ† ظ†ظ‘ظڈظˆط±ظگظƒظڈظ…ظ’ ظ‚ظگظٹظ„ظژ ط§ط±ظ’ط¬ظگط¹ظڈظˆط§ظ’ ظˆظژط±ظژط¢ط،ظژظƒظڈظ…ظ’ ظپظژط§ظ„ظ’طھظژظ…ظگط³ظڈظˆط§ظ’ ظ†ظڈظˆط±ط§ظ‹ ظپظژط¶ظڈط±ظگط¨ظژ ط¨ظژظٹظ’ظ†ظژظ‡ظڈظ… ط¨ظگط³ظڈظˆط±ظچ ظ„ظ‘ظژظ‡ظڈ ط¨ظژط§ط¨ظŒ ط¨ظژط§ط·ظگظ†ظڈظ‡ظڈ ظپظگظٹظ‡ظگ ط§ظ„ط±ظ‘ظژط­ظ’ظ…ظژط©ظڈ ظˆظژط¸ظژظ€ظ‡ظگط±ظڈظ‡ظڈ ظ…ظگظ† ظ‚ظگط¨ظژظ„ظگظ‡ظگ ط§ظ„ظ’ط¹ظژط°ظژط§ط¨ظڈ ﴾

(On the Day when the hypocrites ظ€ men and women ظ€ will say to the believers: "Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!'' It will be said: "Go back to your rear! Then seek a light!'' So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment.) (57:13), and,

﴿ظˆظژظ„ط§ظژ ظٹظژط­ظ’ط³ظژط¨ظژظ†ظ‘ظژ ط§ظ„ظ‘ظژط°ظگظٹظ†ظژ ظƒظژظپظژط±ظڈظˆط§ظ’ ط£ظژظ†ظ‘ظژظ…ظژط§ ظ†ظڈظ…ظ’ظ„ظگظ‰ ظ„ظژظ‡ظڈظ…ظ’ ط®ظژظٹظ’ط±ظŒ ظ„ط§ظ‘ظ‹ظ†ظپظڈط³ظگظ‡ظگظ…ظ’ ط¥ظگظ†ظ‘ظژظ…ظژط§ ظ†ظڈظ…ظ’ظ„ظگظ‰ ظ„ظژظ‡ظڈظ…ظ’ ظ„ظگظٹظژط²ظ’ط¯ظژط§ط¯ظڈظˆط§ظ’ ط¥ظگط«ظ’ظ…ظژط§ظ‹﴾

(And let not the disbelievers think that Our postponing of their punishment is good for them. We postpone the punishment only so that they may increase in sinfulness.) (3:178).''

He then said, "This, and its like, is Allah's mockery of the hypocrites and the people of Shirk.''
